The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new visa waiver system set to go live in 2025. It was first conceptualized by the European Union in 2016 as a way to revolutionize travel from 60 different visa-exempt countries to 26 Schengen nations, including from Canada to Spain. When the system debuts in 2025, ETIAS Spain application will become mandatory for Canadian citizens planning to enter or travel through the Schengen Area. There will be a 6-month adjustment period, but you should not use this grace period as an excuse to delay completing an application once the system becomes available. ETIAS Spain won’t be required for entry into European countries outside of the Schengen Area, like Ireland or the United Kingdom. However, ETIAS will be necessary to travel through any Schengen country, so make sure you know all the details of your trip to be aware of any stops that may require ETIAS approval. Created with simplicity and accessibility in mind, the ETIAS Spain application process is entirely online and should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. The only document you will need available is your valid biometric passport. You may be wondering why the EU has decided to replace its current visa-free policy for 60 different countries. ETIAS is a security measure that will help protect visitors and citizens in the Schengen Area by addressing the following concerns:
ETIAS also aims to simplify the overall travel process by reducing wait times at borders with required pre-screening, which makes this new system ideal for both travelers and border officials. The new system will also enable smoother travel from one Schengen country to the other. Having a uniform process and set of standards for the 26 Schengen nations will make it easier to visit more than one of these countries within the same trip. ETIAS Spain Application is valid for the 3 years following its date of issue and can be issued for a limitless number of trips to an unlimited number of destinations within the Schengen Area, allowing tourists smooth travel to a variety of locations without having to seek approval each time.
Please remember that ETIAS for Spain authorization will not automatically guarantee you entry into Spain or any other Schengen nation. If you raise suspicion at the border, officials have the right to question you and potentially deny you entry into the country. If you are deemed a threat to Schengen Area after receiving ETIAS approval, your ETIAS can be cancelled.

The new ETIAS visa waiver program will simplify the travel process by pre-screening citizens of Canada and 59 other countries currently permitted visa-free travel to the Schengen Area.
After completing an application and receiving ETIAS approval, Canadian citizens will be able to use their ETIAS up to 3 years from its date of issue, no matter how many trips they take or how many countries they travel to. However, if your passport expires within that 3-year period, your ETIAS Visa Spain will expire as well. ETIAS authorization can only ever be linked to one travel document and cannot be moved to a new one. This means that when you get a new passport, you will need to a new ETIAS as well.
The online application process should take no more than 10 minutes, and applicants will usually receive an email notifying them of their application’s statues within 24 hours. If anything about your application seems suspicious, the border officials reviewing it may request additional documents and information. In rare cases, you make asked to attend an in-person interview. For most travelers though, the ETIAS application process should require little time and effort. As long as you have a stable internet connection, a valid biometric passport, and a valid debit or credit card to pay the ETIAS fee, you should be able to complete your application easily.
Here is an overview of the information you will need to provide on the ETIAS form:
